Happy 10 Years with BNI to John Geisler
In 2008, BNI Western Pennsylvania celebrates a remarkable achievement – the first members to reach 10 years of membership! Throughout the year, we will be profiling each of these members as the anniversary of their original date of induction arrives.
In May, we are very excited to recognize John Geisler (with Coldwell Banker Real Estate, Inc.), a founding member of the Upper St. Clair chapter, as the first member in our region to reach this notable milestone.
John recently reflected on his tenure with BNI: “I will soon become the first ten year member of BNI in Pittsburgh. Originally, I was skeptical about the value of BNI, but could not find a good enough reason to drop out. The organization was so well run by Bob and Deanna Schmitt and growing so rapidly, that I was afraid to leave my category open for another Realtor. Then it became clear that the value of developing relationships and being able to give and receive quality referrals is essential to the success of my business. Thanks to BNI, several years ago I was able to stop answering phones and holding random open houses as methods to find clients. At this point in my career, 80% of my business is referral based. There is no better way.”
John not only has longevity with the region, and his chapter, but he has received numerous awards for outstanding achievement during that time! He reached Double Gold status (by sponsoring at least 13 members into BNI chapters), and received the Regional Notable Networker Award in 2004.
2008 Member Extravaganza Contest!
March 31st was the start of this year’s 2008 Member Extravaganza contest for BNI of Western Pennsylvania. The contest winner wins a trip to Universal Studios Orlando Florida. You could be one of more than 200 BNI winners and guests from around the world to enjoy an exciting fun-filled trip to Orlando’s Royal Pacific Resort!
To qualify for the drawing, your chapter needs to sponsor six or more new members between March 31st and May 30th 2008. Those individuals must visit, apply for membership, and be inducted during that time-frame. For rules and regulations, see this flyer.
Even if you don’t win the trip, your chapter is a winner! More members in your chapter means more referrals and business income for everyone!
This year, to boost membership in their chapters and help qualify for the trip, 14 chapters are participating in the Visitor Day program. There will be 3 Joint Visitor Days and 11 Single Visitor Days during April and May this year. This is the third year we’re using a highly successful Visitor Day program. Just to give an idea of the impact Visitor Days have on the region, last year we had 20 visitor days, with a total of 290 visitors, resulting in 74 reported applications. Many others attended Visitor Days and submitted applications subsequent to the actual event date, resulting in a total of 135 new members in April and May 2007. Right now, we have over 650 members region-wide, so that’s a significant amount of growth!

Stop Blaming Your Network
Not getting the referrals you want? Stop pointing fingers and start taking charge of your company's success. by Dr. Ivan Misner
One of the problems people often have when they establish a referral network is that once they feel unsatisfied with their referrals, they blame people in the network for not doing their jobs.
But the truth is that if your referral network isn't working the way you expect, it's your fault. When you find yourself pointing out other people's problems, it's time to ask if you're the reason your network isn't delivering.
"My network's not motivated."
Maybe so, but what are you doing to compel them to refer you? Do you follow up on a regular basis? Are you interested in what they do, or are you more concerned about how interested they are in what you do? In other words, are you helping them in the same way you want them to help you?
